Ethiopia: International Federation of Journalists Calls On E

Unread post by zeru » 13 Mar 2014 08:31

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), a press freedom watchdog, called on the Ethiopian government on Tuesday (March 11th) to release Somali journalist Mohamed Aweys Mudey from police custody.
Mudey was tried without a lawyer or representative present and sentenced to 27 years in prison under Ethiopia's Anti-Terror Law. He was charged with participation in terror activities and with having information on al-Shabaab activities in Ethiopia, according to the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ).
"We are dismayed at this unbelievably severe ruling against the respected veteran journalist, Mohamed Aweys Mudey, who is not guilty of any crime," IFJ President Jim Boumelha said. "The charges against him are ludicrous and we urge the relevant authorities in Ethiopia to release him immediately and unconditionally."
