Countries With Most Journalists Killed, Jailed

Last year saw "a near record" of 211 journalists imprisoned and 70 killed because of their work, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists' newly released annual report "Attacks on the Press." An overwhelming number of journalists killed, or 91 percent, were local, and 94 percent of those killed were men. The report says 94 percent of the killings were committed with complete impunity.
Here are the 10 countries with the highest number of journalists killed or imprisoned in 2013, according to the report:
Syria: 28 Iraq: 10 Egypt: 6 Pakistan: 5 Somalia: 4 India: 3 Brazil: 3 Philippines: 3 Russia: 2 Mali: 2
In addition to the 70 deaths, the report lists the killings of 25 other journalists in circumstances where the motive was unclear. Among those are six in the Philippines, three in Mexico, three in Pakistan, three in India, two in Honduras and two in Syria.
