Ethiopian Schedules Deceased Crew for Duty

Managers at Ethiopian Airlines responsible for the deployment of cabin crew have scheduled one of the flight attendants who died during the accident on board ET409, to another flight meant to arrive at Bole International Airport on Saturday, February 27, 2010.

The latest flight, ET703, was to depart from Rome’s Fiuminco Airport at 12:05am and arrive in Addis Abeba at 07:50am. Seblewongel Seyoum, a mother of two, died on January 25, 2010, during the accident, and found herself posthumously scheduled for duty on this flight.

The placement of the cabin crew is made by an automated system, according to Wogayehu Terefe, manager of Public Relations and Publications at Ethiopian Airlines.

“This does not mean that it cannot be exposed to errors,” she told Fortune.

The mistake has angered some of the cabin crewmembers Fortune talked to, however.

Girma Wake, chief executive officer of Ethiopian, has admitted the mistake, describing it as “human error.” He also offered an apology.

“Such mistakes can happen and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience that might have been caused to anyone,” he told Fortune.

Family members of the deceased say they would accept the apology if it was an honest mistake.

“We are still grieving, and this is a difficult time for us,” a close family member of Seblewongel, who wanted to remain anonymous, said. “If it is an error, then there is nothing that can be done other than to correct it.”

The airline will issue a formal statement of apology in the coming few days, Girma told Fortune.
